Language Learning Outcomes

The following levels describe what learners can understand and do upon completing each stage, from A1 (Beginner) to C1+ (Advanced).

A1 – Beginner

Writing

  • Can write short, simple, isolated phrases and sentences.

Speaking

  • Can produce simple, mainly isolated phrases on very familiar topics.

Reading

  • Can understand familiar names, words, and very simple sentences in short texts.

Listening

  • Can recognise familiar words and very basic phrases when spoken slowly and clearly.

 

A2 – Elementary

Writing

  • Can link basic written phrases and sentences using simple connectors like and, but, and because.

Speaking

  • Can produce a short series of simple phrases and sentences on familiar topics.

Reading

  • Can understand very short, simple texts on everyday topics.

Listening

  • Can understand the main points of short, clear, slow speech.

 

B1 – Intermediate

Writing

  • Can write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar subjects.

Speaking

  • Can produce straightforward descriptions on familiar topics such as experiences, events, and plans.

Reading

  • Can understand short, uncomplicated texts with everyday or work-related vocabulary.

Listening

  • Can understand the main ideas of clear, standard speech on everyday subjects.

 

B2 – Upper Intermediate

Writing

  • Can write clear, detailed texts on a variety of familiar subjects.

Speaking

  • Can produce clear, detailed descriptions on a range of familiar topics.

Reading

  • Can understand texts with frequently used vocabulary related to familiar subjects.

Listening

  • Can understand complex spoken language on familiar topics, in standard dialects.

 

C1 – Advanced (or above)

Writing

  • Can write clear, well-structured texts on complex subjects with few errors.

Speaking

  • Can produce clear, detailed, and fluent speech on a wide range of complex topics.

Reading

  • Can understand long and complex texts on both familiar and unfamiliar topics.

Listening

  • Can understand complex spoken language even when unfamiliar with the topic.

Placement & Assessment

  • All students take the Cambridge English Placement Test (CEPT) for initial placement
  • After completing your course level, you can sit for the Cambridge Linguaskill exam at our Cambridge-authorised exam centre (TSHE)
